January 29, 1945: Six barefoot, tattered American soldiers, survivors of Bataan, marched proudly up the Luzon plain at the head of a guerrilla band of 3,000 Negritos commanded by Lt. Clay Conner with the regimental flag of the 26th Cavalry high on a bamboo pole, singing "California, Here I Come." They presented the historic flag to Major General O.W. Griswold of the 14th Corps.
